About the museum
The story of the Buffalo AKG Art Museum
The Buffalo AKG Art Museum, formerly the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, was founded in 1862 and is one of the oldest public art institutions in the United States. A new building, the Gundlach Building, opened in 2023.
It is known for modern and contemporary art, from Gauguin and Picasso to Pollock, Rothko and Warhol.
The collection
The museum's collection is especially strong in modern and contemporary art, thanks to the patrons Seymour H. Knox Jr. and A. Conger Goodyear, who bought works by living artists from the 1920s onward.
It holds Gauguin's The Yellow Christ, Picasso's La Toilette, Matisse, Frida Kahlo's Self-Portrait with Monkey, and Abstract Expressionists such as Pollock, de Kooning and Rothko.
At ArtLogia you can order 16 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 12 artists led by Paul Gauguin, Henri Matisse and Georges Seurat.

The building
The original Greek Revival building by Edward B. Green opened in 1905. Gordon Bunshaft's 1962 addition and the Gundlach Building by OMA/Shohei Shigematsu, opened in 2023, make it a campus of three linked buildings.
