How we ranked the world's best art museums

Lists of the "best" museums usually count visitors or the size of the building. We wanted to answer a simpler question for art lovers: where do the paintings everyone knows actually hang? So we scored every museum by the famous works in its collection, giving the most weight to the paintings in our Top 100 most famous paintings.

Paris leads the way with the Louvre and the Musée d'Orsay, followed by Madrid's Prado and London's National Gallery. But the list also reaches small treasure houses such as the Mauritshuis in The Hague, home of Girl with a Pearl Earring, and the Czartoryski Museum in Kraków, which holds Leonardo's Lady with an Ermine.

Every museum page tells the story of the collection, lists its masterpieces and shows the paintings you can order as museum-quality, hand-painted reproductions. You can also browse by artist or art movement.

Which is the best art museum in the world?

By the number of world-famous paintings it holds, the Louvre in Paris ranks first, followed by the Musée d'Orsay, the Museo del Prado, the National Gallery in London and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

How is this list of the top 100 museums ranked?

Each museum is scored by the paintings in its collection that appear in our catalogue of famous works: a painting in the Top 100 most famous paintings counts the most, then other celebrated works and best sellers. The result is a ranking of where the world's best-known paintings actually hang.

Which museum has the most famous paintings?

The Louvre holds the Mona Lisa, The Raft of the Medusa and Liberty Leading the People, which is why it tops the ranking. The Musée d'Orsay follows closely thanks to the largest collection of Impressionist masterpieces in the world.

Can I buy a copy of a painting I saw in a museum?

Yes. Every painting shown on these pages can be ordered as a hand-painted oil reproduction, painted by a professional artist on canvas in the size you choose, with free worldwide shipping.

Where are the photos of the museums from?

The museum photographs come from Wikimedia Commons and are used under their free licences. The photographer and licence are credited on each museum's page.
