About the museum
The story of the Alte & Neue Pinakothek
The Bavarian State Painting Collections are shown in Munich's Kunstareal, chiefly in the Alte Pinakothek, which opened in 1836 as one of the first public picture galleries, and the Neue Pinakothek for the nineteenth century.
Their old masters include one of the largest groups of Rubens anywhere, Dürer's self-portrait and major Italian and Dutch works, while the nineteenth-century collection runs from German Romantics to Van Gogh.
The collection
The Alte Pinakothek holds around 700 European paintings from the fourteenth to the eighteenth century. Its Rubens hall shows one of the largest Rubens collections in the world, and its German galleries hold Dürer's Self-Portrait at Twenty-Eight and Four Apostles, Altdorfer and Grünewald.
The Neue Pinakothek, the first museum devoted to contemporary art when it was founded in 1853, covers the nineteenth century from German Romanticism to Impressionism, Klimt and Van Gogh's Sunflowers.
At ArtLogia you can order 184 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 106 artists led by Peter Paul Rubens, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Arnold Böcklin.

The building
Leo von Klenze designed the Alte Pinakothek for King Ludwig I as one of the first museum buildings planned for natural light. Badly damaged in the Second World War, it was rebuilt by Hans Döllgast, who left the repaired brickwork visible as a reminder of the destruction.
