About the museum
The story of the Gemäldegalerie Berlin
Berlin's Gemäldegalerie holds one of the world's leading collections of European painting from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century. Its roots are in the Prussian royal collections, and since 1998 it has been shown in a purpose-built gallery at the Kulturforum.
It is especially strong in early Netherlandish and German painting, Italian Renaissance masters and Dutch seventeenth-century art, with a great group of Rembrandts.
The collection
The Gemäldegalerie shows around a thousand masterpieces from the thirteenth to the eighteenth century in 72 rooms. It is especially strong in early Netherlandish painting, with van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden and Hugo van der Goes, and in German Renaissance art by Dürer, Holbein and Cranach.
Its Italian galleries hold Raphael, Titian, Botticelli and Caravaggio's Amor Vincit Omnia, while its Dutch collection includes Vermeer, Frans Hals and one of the largest groups of Rembrandt and his circle.
At ArtLogia you can order 258 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 142 artists led by Lucas Cranach the Elder, Rembrandt van Rijn and Albrecht Altdorfer.

The building
Divided during the Cold War between East and West Berlin, the collections were reunited in 1998 in a new gallery by Hilmer & Sattler at the Kulturforum, next to Hans Scharoun's Philharmonie. The rooms are lit from above by natural daylight.
