About the museum

The story of the Tretyakov Gallery

The Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow was founded in 1856 by the merchant Pavel Tretyakov, who set out to build a collection of national Russian art and gave it to the city in 1892. Its fairy-tale façade was designed by the painter Viktor Vasnetsov.

It holds the world's greatest collection of Russian art, from Andrei Rublev's icons to the realist painters of the nineteenth century and the landscapes of Shishkin and Levitan.

The collection

Pavel Tretyakov bought the work of living Russian painters, especially the Wanderers, who broke away from the Imperial Academy to paint Russian life and landscape. The gallery's nineteenth-century rooms hold the great works of Repin, Surikov, Kramskoi, Shishkin and Levitan.

The collection begins with medieval icons, above all Andrei Rublev's Trinity, and its branch on Krymsky Val continues into the twentieth century with Malevich's Black Square, Kandinsky and Chagall.

At ArtLogia you can order 197 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 57 artists led by Ivan Shishkin, Fyodor Vasilyev and Isaac Levitan.

The building

The museum grew from Tretyakov's own house in the Zamoskvorechye district. Its picturesque façade in the style of an old Russian tower, with the arms of Moscow, was designed by Viktor Vasnetsov and built in 1902–04.
