About the museum
The story of the Hessian State Museum Darmstadt
The Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt is one of Germany's oldest museums, built from the collections of the Landgraves of Hesse-Darmstadt. Its building opened in 1906.
It is a universal museum that combines natural history with art from the Middle Ages to the present, including old masters and Art Nouveau.
The collection
The museum combines art, natural history and cultural history under one roof, a rare survival of the universal museum. Its painting galleries show medieval altarpieces, old masters and nineteenth-century German art.
It also holds Joseph Beuys's Block Beuys, seven rooms of works installed by the artist himself, and a large collection of Art Nouveau from Darmstadt's artists' colony.
At ArtLogia you can order 3 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 3 artists led by Pieter Bruegel the Elder, John William Waterhouse and Lucas Cranach the Elder.

The building
Alfred Messel designed the building, opened in 1906, with rooms in different historical styles to suit the collections. It reopened in 2014 after a long renovation.
