About the museum

The story of the Munch Museum

The Munch Museum in Oslo holds the vast collection that Edvard Munch left to the city when he died in 1944. Its thirteen-storey building by the harbour opened in 2021.

It owns more than half of Munch's paintings and almost all his prints, including painted and printed versions of The Scream.

The collection

Munch left the city of Oslo all the works still in his possession, around 28,000 items: about 1,100 paintings, 4,500 drawings, 18,000 prints, and his letters, sculptures and photographs.

The museum shows them in changing displays across its upper floors, including versions of The Scream, Madonna, The Sick Child and the huge sketches for the Aula paintings of the University of Oslo.

At ArtLogia you can order 21 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 1 artist.

The new museum by the Spanish firm estudioHerreros opened in October 2021 in Bjørvika, by the harbour, next to the Opera House. Its tilted top floors and recycled aluminium façade give it a distinctive silhouette.
