About the museum
The story of the Rijksmuseum
The Rijksmuseum is the national museum of the Netherlands. Its collection was founded in 1800 and moved in 1885 into Pierre Cuypers' red-brick palace on Amsterdam's Museumplein, which reopened in 2013 after a ten-year restoration.
It holds the finest collection of Dutch Golden Age painting in the world, built around Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals and Jan Steen, and its Gallery of Honour leads to The Night Watch.
The collection
The Rijksmuseum's collection of around a million objects tells eight centuries of Dutch history, but its heart is the seventeenth century. The Gallery of Honour brings together Vermeer, Frans Hals, Jan Steen and Rembrandt, ending at The Night Watch in its own hall.
Its holdings of Rembrandt include The Jewish Bride, The Syndics and late self-portraits, and it also shows Dutch landscapes, still lifes and seascapes, ship models, Delftware and the famous seventeenth-century dolls' houses.
At ArtLogia you can order 270 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 156 artists led by Rembrandt van Rijn, Vincent van Gogh and Willem van de Velde the Younger.

The building
Pierre Cuypers designed the building, opened in 1885, in a mix of Gothic and Renaissance styles that some Protestant critics found too 'Catholic' at the time. A passage for cyclists and pedestrians runs through the middle of it, and the 2013 renovation by Cruz y Ortiz restored the painted interiors and created a light-filled atrium.
