About the museum

The story of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum

The Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum in Madrid shows the collection assembled by two generations of the Thyssen-Bornemisza family. Spain acquired it in 1993, and it is displayed in the Villahermosa Palace, opposite the Prado.

It fills the gaps of Madrid's other museums, running from early Italian and Flemish painting through Impressionism and German Expressionism to American Pop art.

The collection

Baron Heinrich Thyssen-Bornemisza and his son Hans Heinrich built one of the great private collections of the twentieth century. It was lent to Spain in 1992 and bought by the Spanish state in 1993.

The museum covers eight centuries in about 1,000 works: early Italian and Netherlandish panels, Renaissance portraits such as Ghirlandaio's Giovanna Tornabuoni, Caravaggio, Impressionism, German Expressionism, and American painting by Hopper and Lichtenstein. The Carmen Thyssen collection adds more Impressionist and nineteenth-century works.

At ArtLogia you can order 134 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 99 artists led by Frederic Edwin Church, Giovanni Antonio Canal and Eugène Louis Boudin.

The building

The Palacio de Villahermosa, an early nineteenth-century palace, was converted by the architect Rafael Moneo, with salmon-pink walls and skylights. A new wing for the Carmen Thyssen collection opened in 2004.
