About the museum

The story of the Van Gogh Museum

The Van Gogh Museum opened on Amsterdam's Museumplein in 1973 to show the collection kept by the artist's family, above all his brother Theo's widow, Jo van Gogh-Bonger, and their son Vincent Willem.

It holds the largest collection of Van Gogh's work in the world, more than 200 paintings plus drawings and hundreds of letters, following his whole short career from the dark Dutch years to the blazing colour of Arles and Saint-Rémy.

The collection

The museum follows Van Gogh's life in order: the dark, earthy paintings of his Dutch years, the bright colours he discovered in Paris, the blazing works of Arles and Saint-Rémy and the last canvases from Auvers-sur-Oise.

Alongside the paintings, it holds around 500 drawings and most of his surviving letters, and it shows works by contemporaries who influenced him or whom he influenced, from Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec to Japanese woodblock prints.

At ArtLogia you can order 186 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 13 artists led by Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Camille Pissarro.
