About the museum

The story of the Condé Museum

The Condé Museum is in the Château de Chantilly, north of Paris. Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale, filled it with art and left the château to the Institut de France in 1886, on condition that nothing ever be lent or moved.

Its picture gallery, hung floor to ceiling, holds the second-largest collection of old master paintings in France after the Louvre, including Raphael, Poussin and Ingres.

The collection

The Duke of Aumale, son of King Louis-Philippe, assembled one of the most important private collections of nineteenth-century France while in exile in England. The Condé Museum shows about 1,000 paintings, 2,500 drawings and a library of rare books.

Its treasures include Raphael's Three Graces and Madonna of Loreto, Poussin's Massacre of the Innocents, Ingres, Delacroix and a large collection of French portrait drawings by Jean and François Clouet. Its library holds the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry.

At ArtLogia you can order 38 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 28 artists led by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, Jean-Antoine Watteau and Nicolas Poussin.

The building

The Château de Chantilly, rebuilt in the 1870s and 1880s by Honoré Daumet on the ruins of earlier castles, stands on a lake surrounded by gardens by André Le Nôtre. Its Grandes Écuries, the eighteenth-century stables, are a landmark in their own right.
