About the museum

The story of the Sorolla Museum

The Sorolla Museum is the house and studio that the Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla built in Madrid. His widow left it to the Spanish state, and it opened as a museum in 1932.

The house keeps his studio much as he left it, surrounded by the Andalusian-style gardens he designed, and holds the largest collection of his luminous paintings of beaches, gardens and family life.

The collection

The museum holds more than 1,200 paintings by Joaquín Sorolla, as well as thousands of his drawings, his library, his studio furniture and his own collection of Spanish ceramics and sculpture.

Its galleries show every side of his work, from the sunlit beaches of Valencia to portraits of his wife Clotilde and their children, and the oil sketches he painted for the Hispanic Society of America.

At ArtLogia you can order 19 of its paintings as hand-painted reproductions, by 1 artist.

The building

Sorolla built the house in 1910–11 in the Chamberí district of Madrid and lived there with his family until his death in 1923. Its three gardens, inspired by the Alcázar of Seville and the Alhambra in Granada, were designed by the painter himself.
